ZADIK special event at ART COLOGNE 2025
"Charlotte Zander: collector, gallery owner, museum founder"
ZADIK (Central Archive for German and International Art Market Studies) sheds light on stations in the life of the collector, gallery owner, museum founder and ART COLOGNE Prize winner of 1997, Charlotte Zander. The exhibition can be seen from 10 October 2025 to 25 September 2026 in the ZADIK and will be presented in an adapted form from 6 to 9 November 2025 at ART COLOGNE as a special event.Charlotte Zander (1930–2014) initially began her journey in the art business as a collector. From the mid-1960s on, she built up her collection with works of artists who had not studied at any art college – at that time, so-called "naïve art". On this foundation, she founded the gallery "Charlotte Galerie für naive Kunst" in Munich in 1971, which existed until 1995. She then opened her private museum in Castle Bönnigheim in 1996, presented her collection here, organised exhibitions and pursued cooperation projects with international cultural institutions.
The special exhibiton (Hall 11.1, Stand D19) is dedicated to Zander's varied impact ranging between collecting, mediation and the advancement of art. How did Charlotte Zander fill out the various roles she assumed over the course of her life? How did she proceed in achieving visibility for the artistic positions she treasured? How did her network of artists and other participants in the art trade function? What joint projects, exchange relationships and discourses took place?
Embedded in the 58th ART COLOGNE, which will provide a broad offering of international art and a high quality supporting programme from 6 to 9 November 2025, the exhibition at the same time inspires a critical contention with historical, often stigmatising terminology and shows how the Zander collection is carrying her legacy into the future.
About ZADIK
ZADIK | Central Archive for German and International Art Market Studies is a scientific institute of the University of Cologne and concentrates on the archiving, preparation, critical and reflective research and mediation of the history, structures, contexts and developments of international art systems. Today the central archive comprises more than 200 holdings of gallery owners, art dealers, auction houses, art critics, curators, specialised photographers and other participants in the art market, with a focus on the period from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. ZADIK was founded in 1992 as the world's first special archive for the history of the art trade and was transferred to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Cologne in 2020.

„Charlotte Zander: Sammlerin, Galeristin, Museumsgründerin“
Das ZADIK (Zentralarchiv für deutsche und internationale Kunstmarktforschung) beleuchtet die Lebensstationen der Sammlerin, Galeristin, Museumsgründerin und ART COLOGNE-Preisträgerin des Jahres 1997, Charlotte Zander. Die Ausstellung ist vom 10. Oktober 2025 bis 25. September 2026 im ZADIK zu sehen und wird in angepasster Form vom 6. bis 9. November 2025 auf der ART COLOGNE als Sonderschau präsentiert.Charlotte Zander (1930–2014) begann ihren Weg im Kunstbetrieb zunächst als Sammlerin. Sie baute ab Mitte der 1960er Jahre ihre Sammlung mit Werken von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern auf, die an keiner Kunsthochschule studiert haben, damals sogenannter „Naiver Kunst“. Daraus hervorgehend gründete sie 1971 die Galerie „Charlotte Galerie für Naive Kunst“ in München, welche bis 1995 Bestand hatte. Im Anschluss eröffnete sie 1996 ihr privates Museum im Schloss Bönnigheim, präsentierte hier ihre Sammlung, organisierte Ausstellungen und verfolgte Kooperationen mit internationalen Kulturinstitutionen.
Die Sonderschau (Halle 11.1, Stand D19) widmet sich Zanders vielfältigem Wirken zwischen Sammeln, Vermitteln und Fördern von Kunst. Wie gestaltete Charlotte Zander die verschiedenen Rollen aus, die sie im Laufe ihres Lebens einnahm? Wie ging sie vor, um den von ihr geschätzten künstlerischen Positionen Sichtbarkeit zu verschaffen? Wie funktionierte ihr Netzwerk mit Künstler:innen und weiteren Akteur:innen des Kunstbetriebs? Welche gemeinsamen Projekte, Austauschbeziehungen und Diskurse gab es?
Eingebettet in die 58. ART COLOGNE, die vom 6. bis 9. November 2025 ein breites internationales Kunstangebot und ein hochkarätiges Rahmenprogramm bietet, regt die Ausstellung zugleich zu einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit historischen, häufig stigmatisierenden Begrifflichkeiten an und zeigt, wie die Sammlung Zander ihr Erbe in die Zukunft trägt.
Über das ZADIK
Das ZADIK | Zentralarchiv für deutsche und internationale Kunstmarktforschung ist ein wissenschaftliches Institut der Universität zu Köln und widmet sich der Archivierung, Aufbereitung, kritisch-reflektierenden Erforschung und Vermittlung der Historie, Strukturen, Kontexte und Entwicklungen internationaler Kunstsysteme. Heute umfasst das Zentralarchiv über 200 Bestände von Galerist:innen, Kunsthändler:innen, Auktionshäusern, Kunstkritiker:innen, Kurator:innen, Fachfotograf:innen und weiteren Akteur:innen des Kunstmarktes mit Fokus auf die Zeitspanne vom beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart. Als weltweit erstes Spezialarchiv zur Geschichte des Kunsthandels wurde das ZADIK 1992 gegründet und 2020 an die Philosophische Fakultät der Universität zu Köln überführt.
