Magdalena Kröner receives the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Prize for Art Criticism 2022

Award for the life's work of a border crosser and independent critic

The critic Magdalena Kröner, who lives in Düsseldorf and the USA, received the Prize for Art Criticism 2022. The award, endowed with € 5,000, is presented by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine (ADKV) in cooperation with ART COLOGNE and is aimed at freelance journalists.

The art journalist and art historian Magdalena Kröner is equally adept at the small and the large form. She is equally adept at daily journalism and trenchant criticism as she is at essays and well-founded analysis. Her art-critical texts appear in media as diverse as the art magazine Art, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Kunstforum International. However, the author always cultivates her own recognisable linguistic style and develops an independent attitude towards art and the world. Particularly productive is her extensive examination of the tense relationship between technology, art and physicality. Here Kröner shows how journalistic work and the scientific search for knowledge are mutually dependent and fruitful. Kröner is not content with domestic German discourses, but incorporates international perspectives throughout her work and transfers them into local debates, according to the jury's statement.

The prize has been offered by the ADKV since 1999 and has been awarded in cooperation with ART COLOGNE since 2006. The award honours the commitment of freelance art critics who deal with contemporary art and its social context in the trade and daily press or in other media.

The members of the 2022 jury were: Prof. Dr. Stephan Berg (Director, Kunstmuseum Bonn), Olaf Nicolai (artist, Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich), Dr. Noemi Smolik (art critic, award winner 2020), Prof. Dr. Kerstin Thomas (Professor of Modern Art History, Institute of Art History, University of Stuttgart)) and Dr. Kia Vahland (art critic and editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung).

The prize was awarded together with the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Prize for Art Associations on.
